As of February 1, 2008, Sit Means Sit welcomes professional dog trainer, Terry Christie, owner and founder of Canine Magic™, a privately-owned dog training company located in northeastern Massachusetts. Terry Christie and Canine Magic will now become synonymous with Sit Means Sit, North Boston. Although the formal affiliation is new, Terry Christie's relationship with Sit Means Sit was established in October of 2003, when she graduated from the Sit Means Sit School for Remote Collar Trainers in Las Vegas, NV.

For Terry, who is a life-long, Boston-area resident with degrees in science and nursing, in addition to her certification as a dog trainer and membership in the International Association of Canine Professionals (IACP), this is not just another job… it is a personal passion; and, as Terry suggests, her clients should expect nothing less than outstanding results. "When I started this business, I was amazed by the number of calls I received from people who had worked with other trainers and methods, and were still experiencing the same behavioral issues with their dogs. I tell my clients that I'm the last dog trainer they'll ever need; and, I'm confident in my ability to deliver on that promise." In her experience, dogs and their owners need to learn how to communicate effectively with one another in order to develop the "bond of mutual trust" that is required before any meaningful training can take place, a mutual understanding that Terry calls the foundation of her training.

The Sit Means Sit approach to dog training is to develop practical and dependable obedience using techniques that are simple, gentle, and very effective. Training with Canine Magic / Sit Means Sit, also provides the education required to understand canine behavior and the skills necessary to train any dog successfully through clear communication, confidence, and mutual trust. The company lives up to its name by delivering on its mission: rapid transformation of the relationship between owner and dog to provide greater freedom and happiness.

Terry attracts a range of clients, including those with their first puppies as well as those with adult dogs previously declared "untrainable." Very often during the first session, immediate changes in behavior can be readily observed… and in some circumstances, these changes are astounding, a transformation that Terry suggests "could never happen within such a short period of time using conventional methods." Most clients who employ the training methods properly and consistently can expect to have a well-mannered dog that can be taken anywhere, even off-leash, in as little as six to eight weeks. This success has even included a number of clients who believed that their only alternatives were to either relinquish their dog to a shelter or to have it euthanized.

Sit Means Sit North Boston / Canine Magic, offers behavioral consultations, puppy socialization, and private lessons in addition to the very popular "Unlimited" Training program, which offers a combination of private and group sessions that teach basic commands in real-world situations. Attendance at group trainings is unlimited for a six-month period of time, with follow-up for the lifetime of the dog. This program has been so successful that it continues to attract clients outside the local area who live in Western Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Maine.

So why haven't you heard more about our new affiliate Canine Magic? Most of the company's business has derived from past and present clients (http://www.caninemagic.biz/success.html), website contacts, and referrals from the International Association of Canine Professionals via the website of Cesar Millan, the National Geographic channel's "Dog Whisperer," whose educational concepts on dog psychology are closely woven into Terry's methodology.

My Manchester Terrier, Rocky, used to be a very difficult dog. What started as a case of separation anxiety turned into severe aggression. I live in the middle of Boston and am constantly surrounded by people and other dogs. It got to the point where I could not leave my apartment with Rocky because he would, unprovoked, lunge and attempt to attack anything in his path (people, animals, etc.). My landlord wanted to kick me out, I was threatened by fellow tenants, and another trainer told me I would have to put him down. As a last ditch effort, I contacted Terry.

With only 3 lessons Rocky has improved so dramatically that I have had people tell me that they cannot believe he is the same dog! He listens to me 100% of the time, and is no longer aggressive towards other people or dogs. I'v been able to take him everywhere with me because of his new behavior - road trips, family gatherings, off leash walks, friends' homes - it's beyond amazing. Instead of being banished to the crate or stuck in the house, he is now truly part of the family and has become the companion I had always hoped for in a dog. Thank you so much!

My wife and I have a two year old Staffordshire Bull Terrier named Bulls-eye. We knew when we accepted the responsibility for owning a breed with a less than spectacular reputation (he’s part of the Pit Bull family) we would need to ensure he was well behaved at all times.

Now our story is similar to many dog owners. We took our dog to puppy school and obedience training so we could raise a good canine citizen. We wanted the dog other people would be jealous of.

So it began; clicker training. It was eight weeks of click click click click click with twelve other spastic puppies. To make a long story short, if I wasn’t constantly holding a treat in Bulls-eye’s face he wasn’t listening. The trainer was ineffective and inattentive. If your dog didn’t show immediate progress she couldn’t be bothered. The clicker was useless. I basically chased him around the house and yard clicking and shouting commands like an idiot. Once in a while I would earn a quizzical stare from him.

A few months passed with zero progress and I realized I needed to earn Bulls-eye’s respect and take control of the situation. I resumed my search for a new trainer and method.

I sent out a few emails and left a few voice mails for trainers who all advertised they could “cure” my dog’s behavior problems. SATISFACTION GUARANTEED, ANY BREED. Yeah right! They were singing a different tune when they learned what type of dog Bulls-eye is. “You would be better off finding someone who specializes with this breed” I was told on two occasions. Otherwise I didn’t receive any response to my inquiries. Apparently it was any breed but mine.

Then it FINALLY happened. I came across Terry’s website. THANK GOD!

I sent an email explaining my situation and what type of dog I have. Within a couple hours I received a response to my email with the assurance she could help. We spoke on the phone, set up our first appointment and we were off and running and I never looked back.

Within the first half-hour of the first session there was an immediate change in Bulls-eye’s behavior. He was learning who the leader of the pack is. And it wasn’t him. He was a jumper, on people and furniture, and his name was a formality because he didn’t come when called. Now it is the complete opposite. Recently I was working in my drive way and bulls-eye managed to get out of the back yard. He scampered around the drive way enjoying his new found freedom. All I had to do was belt out “come” (once!) and he was glued to my side. This is crucial because I live on a busy street. He no longer jumps; which my guests appreciate, he walks on a leash like a pro. I don’t have to brace myself and prepare for two miles of wrestling like I did in the past. And most importantly he waits for me to tell him what to do. He doesn’t make any decisions for himself, I’m the leader!

I now have the dog that other people wish they had. The comments I hear now are regarding what a sweet dog he is and how well behaved (and unfortunately the occasional misinformed individual). Terry’s program is incredible. When I think back on Bulls-eye’s behavior then compared to now I am still amazed. Terry will take you back from the brink of insanity. The frustration will be eliminated. She is patient, knowledgeable and her program is extremely effective.
